I see a lot of posts that reference “people in power” who do nothing to stop this madness. I see complaints about the “do-nothing Senate.” I see a lot of people trying to stay safely in the middle.

Let’s just face the facts. 90 percent of Americans are in favor of some form of gun control, but 50 Republican Senators oppose even debating legislation. I’m so especially tired of “thoughts and prayers” when children, teachers, the elderly are massacred, gunned down with weapons Republicans refuse to control. Republicans want to comfort victims’ families after refusing to do anything to help keep their loved ones alive in the first place.

As with many things going in the wrong direction these days, this isn’t about both sides, or nameless context-free objects. We have one party that’s anti gun control, science, women’s rights, voting rights, democracy. One side. The GOP.

And it’s not just “powerful elected officials.” It’s the people who voted for them. We should all look in the mirror. You should look in the mirror.

Who’s responsible for this mess? We are. Who’s accoutable? Definitely not Republicans.

Here’s a scene from yesterday morning. Spring is underway. You can see the leaves coming in, but that’s just beginning. Something I hadn’t noticed before. At this moment, you can see the leaves and the underlying skeletal structure of the trees. The skeleton will soon disappear, but it’ll still be there, deeply rooted and holding things together.

Early in my career, a colleague suggested I send a “brilliant yet difficult” employee to an American Management Association training program formally called Executive Effectiveness and euphemistically referred to as “charm school.” I reached out to the AMA instructor, who assured me that the class was appropriate. However, he also suggested I first take the workshop myself to be better able to support my direct report. He told me, “no one ever takes this advice.” Challenge accepted!

Not only did I learn a lot, but his advice also set a pattern for me. I go first. It helps me help you. If I’m open, it also just helps me. I wouldn’t be where and who I am without following this idea of taking the training first!

P.S. Charm school taught me that I should be less charming, that I should speak what’s on my mind because the team needs to hear it. Still #workingonit!!!

“Good morning!!! Today’s going to be a good day!!” That’s a message an esteemed colleague sent me this morning, and I’m happy to say it’s true!

Today is my last working for Tacoma Power and the City of Tacoma. Finishing up some odds and ends this morning, then lunch with my team members. We haven’t been in the same room in over two years, although we see each other every day. We’ve grown closer through the pandemic even though we were further apart.

Later today, we’ll have an event I’ve been calling “Bill Berry’s Very Excellent Virtual Retirement Soirée and Jamboree.” I started this resignation/retirement process thinking I didn’t need a retirement party. My team convinced me that they and others in our organization wanted the opportunity to send me off in the right way, and they weren’t alone.

Now I’ve turned 180º and need this more than anyone else. I’ve been hearing and will hear very nice things said about me. There’ll be some stories, maybe even a tall tale or two. Hopefully, we won’t spill too many tears.

However, this will be an opportunity for me to say, “Thank You!” We accomplish almost nothing by ourselves. I’ve generated a boatload of ideas (once upon a time, I was known unofficially as a “Random Thought Generator”). But even the most valuable ideas fall flat without help and support from those around me. I want to thank and offer my best wishes to everyone who helped, offered support, provided feedback along the way!

Yes, today’s going to be a perfect day!
